Rolex Oyster Speedking “Freshly Dug Potato?” circa 1941

$2,950.00

Our beloved and colorful watchmaker Orlando used to crack us up when he referred to a filthy watch, brought in to our shop for a battery coated in years of accumulated crud, as “a freshly dug potato.” Now the current watch is not filthy, but the dial is more distressed than most watches we typically offer here. However, there is something we find compelling here, and that is the entirely original 1/2 Roman, 1/2 Arabic dial dating back to 1941. Now while the white background may resemble the skin of an Idaho potato, there is still enough contrast against the original luminous figures, that this dial, imperfect as it may be, still is worthy of love.

We offer here a circa 1941 boy’s size Rolex manual wind Speedking ref 2280 with a clean Oyster case, remarkably free of corrosion with it’s original aged 1/2 Roman, 1/2 Arabic dial. So called by Japanese collectors “unique” dial, this popular dial configuration has also come to be known, with considerable controversy, in it’s many refinished iterations, as the “California” dial. Powered by 17 jewel manual wind 9 3/4 caliber manual wind movement with sweep seconds. With it’s original “Mercedes” hands which have been relumed to closely match the all original luminous on the dial.

While not everyone’s taste, we think this barn find caliber watch could serve you well  even if you don’t own a vintage Indian motorcycle or 1942 Packard. (See photo)

The watch has been fully serviced and is offered in it’s original ref 2280 case with period screw down Oyster crown, and your choice of distressed leather or bund style strap if you prefer. Guaranteed genuine and offered with a 1 year warrantee of accurate time keeping and operation.

Brand

Vintage Rolex & Pre-Owned Rolex Watches

There is no watch brand more associated with quality, prestige, luxury, success, and social status than Rolex. Founded in the UK in 1908 and soon relocated to Switzerland, Rolex is credited with countless technical advances in time keeping accuracy, the introduction in 1928 of the water and dust resistant “Oyster” case, and in 1933, the perfection of the self winding “Perpetual” movement. With sponsorship of sporting events as wide reaching as the America’s cup, to the Daytona 500, golf and tennis tournaments, and expeditions to the far reaches of the world, Rolex has always promoted it’s brand as an icon of success, achievement, and conquest. With popular “tool” watches such as the diver’s Submariner or Seadweller, the Aviator’s dual time zone GMT, the spelunker’s 24 hour Explorer, or the auto racer’s Daytona, Rolex has created loyal followings for the sports minded man. And the dressy Datejust and Presidential models, once the CEO’s trademark timepiece, are now much sought after by both men and woman as a luxury fashion statement. Whether vintage Rolex or more contemporary, your choice of a Rolex will always be a good choice.

All of our pre-owned Vintage Rolex watches are fully restored and guaranteed genuine to give you excellent service and piece of mind.
