Rolex Oyster Quartz Datejust ref 17000 circa 1978

An especially fine condition Rolex stainless steel Oyster Quartz Datejust ref 17000 serial # 5.4 million circa 1979. Featuring a 36mm diameter angular design case with smooth bezel, and sapphire crystal and integral flat and angular bracelet.

This is the earliest version Oysterquartz with  dial signed Rolex Datejust above and Oysterquartz below the center post, without the later Chronometer designation to the dial. Powered by calibre 5035 Rolex in house quartz movement.

The case and bracelet are in unusually fine condition appearing to be in very minty, never polished condition. The watch retains its original green case back sticker. The bracelet is super tight and the folding deployant clasp closes securely. The bracelet will comfortably fit a 7 1/4″ wrist.

Background on the Rolex Oysterquartz:  The Oyster Quartz movement was introduced by Rolex during the “quartz revolution” of the late 1970’s to compete with the burgeoning Japanese market in quartz movements. Rolex produced their own high quality movement, and outfitted the watch in a much more modernist design and more geometric formed Oyster case. The OysterQuartz was produced in the Datejust version in steel and steel and gold combo, and in white gold or yellow gold in the DayDate version. With it’s larger and more geometric design, the Oysterquartz case and bracelet design has become a very popular alternative to the traditional rounded design Datejust model.
