Rolex Oyster Perpetual “Everest” ref 5504 circa 1958

A terrific looking original black gilt dial Rolex Oyster Perpetual “Everest” ref 5504 circa 1958. Featuring a 36mm diameter stainless steel case with smooth 14K YG bezel, with a beautiful original gloss black, gilt dial with applied gold marquise shaped indexes and tapered sword lume filled hands. The dial is signed Rolex Oyster Perpetual “Everest” Super Precision and signed SWISS at the bottom. Powered by self winding calibre 1530 movement with sweep seconds.

This model is from a series of Oyster Perpetual models from the mid to late 1950’s that paid homage to the Rolex sponsored climbs of Mt Everest of the era.

The current example we suspect has Canadian market origins, as years ago we saw a number of these 2 tone models  some with Explorer designations, and others with the popular 3/6/9 numeral dials typically associated with the Explorer models that were sourced from Canadian dealers.

The current model features a pristine condition original black gilt dial with raised marquise shaped indexes, gilt tapered sword and sweep seconds hands and signed SWISS at the bottom designating the use of radium as the luminous material. Unlike most Oyster Perpetual models of this period and later, this example is a robust 36mm, not the smaller 34mm. The case back bears the date code for the 2nd quarter of 1958.

Some time in its lifetime, this model was fitted with an aftermarket SS/14K ETX signed heavy Oyster bracelet. The clasp is an original Rolex C & I clasp with a date code of 1979, but the bracelet itself is aftermarket and not of Rolex manufacture. A 20mm strap of your choice will be included with purchase for those who prefer to wear on a strap instead of the accompanying bracelet.
