Rolex GMT ref 6542 Bakelite Bezel circa 1958

A beautiful example of the very popular and elusive Rolex GMT ref 6542 no crown guards model circa 1958 with genuine gilt dial and beautiful aftermarket bezel and bakelite insert. This watch is so striking and original looking, it could easily pass for the real thing, currently bringing 6 figure prices when they look like this one.

Ref 6542 case serial # 397,xxx dates to 1958 with 1958 case back date code. With beautiful condition T<25 2nd generation gilt minute track dial, original lume hands, correctly signed on dial “Officially Certified Chronometer” without the word Superlative added on later 1675 models, and with 24 hour mini hand. Powered by Rolex caliber 1030 movement with sweep seconds and original red and black alternating “roulette” date wheel. With very scarce and desirable, exceptional condition, 1958 date code riveted Oyster bracelet with original clasp marked SWISS MADE, Steelinox, with Rolex stamp, large crown extending beyond the clasp, and with 58 marked end pieces.

NOTE: These early 6542 GMT models are renown for damaging, or entirely losing their original bakelite bezels, as is the case with this example. The replacement bezel, and particularly the  bakelite insert is quite magnificent in its appearance, with a very deep vintage red and blue coloration, and cream color numbers. Easily the best looking replacement insert we have ever seen.

This watch has been fully serviced by one of our veteran watchmakers, the case left unpolished as acquired. Offered with our usual 1 year warrantee of accurate time keeping and operation. A great looking piece without the $100,000 price tag.
