Rolex Day Date ref 1803 18K YG Technical Dial “Se Habla Español” circa 1973

A particularly interesting and uncommon vintage Rolex Day-Date ref. 1803 in 18K yellow gold, serial #2.57 million, circa 1969, featuring a very distinctive silver “technical” dial and Spanish language day wheel.

The classic 36mm yellow gold Oyster case is fitted with an 18K fluted bezel and acrylic crystal, framing an especially appealing silver pie-pan dial with applied yellow gold baton indexes and matching gilt hands. What really sets this example apart, however, is the unusual outer minute track with prominent five-minute Arabic numerals — a seldom encountered dial configuration that gives the otherwise elegant Day-Date a surprisingly instrument-like appearance.

Adding even more personality is the original-style Spanish day display, shown here reading “LUNES,” paired with the date aperture at 3 o’clock beneath the familiar Cyclops magnifier. It is a great combination of the formal Day-Date design with a slightly more utilitarian dial layout than one normally associates with the model.

Powered by the Rolex caliber 1556 self winding chronometer movement with sweep seconds and non quick-set day and date functions. The caliber 1556 represents the later evolution of the long-running 15xx-series movements used in the vintage Day-Date and is regarded as one of Rolex’s robust workhorse automatic movements of the period. Fitted on an olive-toned leather strap with matching 18K yellow gold Rolex tang buckle, giving the watch a much more understated and contemporary presence than the traditional full gold President bracelet.

A terrific vintage Day-Date for the collector who appreciates the classic ref. 1803 but wants something well outside the usual champagne-dial President configuration. The silver technical dial, Spanish day wheel and leather strap give this example a particularly distinctive personality while retaining all of the character of Rolex’s iconic vintage 36mm Day-Date.
