Longines Super Compressor ref 7042-2 1st Generation Dial Variation circa 1960
Vintage Longines stainless steel Super Compressor ref# 7042-2 circa 1960. This is the original vintage oversized diver’s model. Featuring a 42mm diameter case with 53mm heavy extended lugs, with original gloss black dial with patina’d gilts numerals and indexes, oversized luminous hands, and with rotating inner elapsed time bezel. With 2 large cross hatched crowns, the lower to set the time and manually wind the watch, and the upper crown to control the inner elapsed time bezel. Powered by self winding Longines caliber 19AS movement with sweep seconds but without date. Domed case back features a deeply embossed skin diver wearing SCUBA gear and carrying a spear gun.
This is an exceptional condition example of this scarce and desirable oversized diver’s model. Truly impressive on the wrist with its large and robust case and gorgeous bright and glossy dial. With a simply beautiful condition gloss black dial, shiny gilt silver numerals and Longines hour glass logo, and gorgeous tan original patina’d lumes. With unpolished case with high relief skin diver logo. Case back clearly shows shallow engraved triangular index on case back rim.
Aficionados may note the subtle but distinct difference in the dial layout of this 1st generation model from the more common second (7042-3) and third (7042-4) generations of this model. The most notable difference is the location and configuration of the luminous bars. The final 2 photos posted allow you to compare the more common 7042-3 dial configuration with the earlier 7042-2 example being offered here.
Offered on a vintage style distressed leather 22mm strap of your choice. A truly great collectible vintage model.
Accompanied by a letter from Longines brand heritage confirming sale of this watch on December 15th, 1960 to Longines-Wittnauer agent in the U.S. for Longines at the time.
