If you are not familiar with the operation of lever set movements found in all American railroad grade pocket watches, please be sure to read our description below.
Background: American made railroad grade pocket watches by such companies as Elgin, Waltham, Illinois, and Hamilton were the finest quality pocket watches of the era; of such high standards and quality, that some Swiss companies attempted to copy the work of the American firms by producing watches with American sounding names. We offer here a fine example of American watch making from the early part of the 20th century.
Explanation of lever set: To qualify for use on America’s railroads, watches needed to meet a number of rigorous criteria of design and accuracy. One of the most important was the use of a lever to free up the time changing function of the movement. Lever set set refers to the safety mechanism of a small steel lever, exposed by unscrewing the bezel, which allows the movement to be set. Stem wound, as most watches, but lever set, prevents unintentional changing of the time, as could occur if the stem were to pull out, or loosen while being carried. This is a vital safety feature of all railroad grade watches when errors of time keeping could have disastrous effects on trains running on strict schedules over the same tracks.
We also offer turned wood pocket watch stands available separately so you can display and enjoy your antique pocket watch on a night stand or mantle. No more pocket watches relegated to the sock drawer!
