A fine and very attractive example vintage Rolex Daytona “Big Red” ref 6263 serial # 4.0 million circa 1975 complete with original Rolex warranty papers, Rolex box and scarce Rolex Cosmograph Daytona booklet. Featuring a black tachometer 200 mph bezel and original black original tritium lume “reverse panda” dial with white chronograph registers and with DAYTONA lettering printed in RED.

Powered by Rolex caliber 727 manual wind movement with registers for 30 minutes, 12 hours, and constant seconds. With original bakelite bezel free of cracks or lifting. A corrosion free case with case reference and serial #’s clear and distinct. With clean case back, free of personalized engraving and stamped CRS for Rolex contracted case maker Charles Renee Spielman. With Rolex heavy Oyster bracelet with flip lock clasp with #557 end pieces.

Background: The reference 6263 model is second only to the Paul Newman dial Daytona in terms of desirability among vintage Rolex Daytona models. The 6265 reference is similar, but has a steel tachometer bezel. The 6263 with black bakelite bezel is preferred in either the black dial or silver dial version of this model. The screw down pushers, and wider bezel add to the size and give the watch a larger presence on the wrist. “Big Red” refers to the large font printing in RED of the word DAYTONA over the 6 0’clock register. Service replacement dials with RED printing of the DAYTONA use a smaller and lighter font.

The details: A fine condition example, previously polished, with beefy lugs, and Rolex service replacement screw down pushers. With beautiful condition “reverse panda” dial with bold black background and contrasting white registers and intact original puffy lume plots. Very minor signs of aging on the white registers are present but do not in our opinion detract from the appearance of the watch to the naked eye. The photos reveal some corrosion on the large sweep seconds chronograph hand.

With excellent condition calibre 727 movement with bright plates, no darkening of the bridges, and with all chronograph functions working well. With trip lock crown that threads evenly and tightly onto the case tube. The heavy Oyster bracelet offers is tight, with secure deployant clasp and will fit a 7.5” wrist. Daytona’s of this era bear 571 end pieces. The end pieces on this example are stamped 557.

Overall an extremely nice, though not MINT (for the most demanding of collectors) example of this very popular model with great wrist presence, and all the more special with original Rolex warranty papers, period Rolex box, and extremely scarce period Rolex Cosmograph Daytona booklet. Conservatively priced at a firm $95,000.
