A striking looking vintage Rolex 18K YG Submariner ref 18068 circa 1981 with a remarkably naturally faded gold tropical dial. Featuring a naturally weathered and aged nipple index dial that was originally cobalt blue which has lost all the blue color and is now a golden yellow color.

We know that the blue paint on vintage Rolex dials is not very stable, and we see many faded blue dials. However, this dial shows no evidence of the original blue and is really quite fabulous looking. We have paired this dial with an old faded “Caribbean blue” insert with aged pearl which perfectly complements the dial. The original tritium lume of the dial is intact, and we sourced a set of tritium sub hands that appear a bit lighter than the lume on the dial.

The result is both unfamiliar and amazing. With our usual “tongue in cheek” approach we are calling this formerly blue, and now yellow dial sub our “Yellow Submarine-er,” referencing the iconic Beatles animated film. And fittingly, as Ringo remarked in the film to the chief of the Blue Meanies, “Are you sure you are bluish? You don’t look bluish!” Indeed, this dial at one time was bluish!

The details: Featuring a 40mm diameter 18K YG case with sapphire crystal, original nipple dial and unidirectional elapsed time bezel with faded blue insert. With original Rolex 18K YG Oyster bracelet with flip lock clasp. Beefy lug, previously polished case, tight bracelet fits a 7 1/4-7½” wrist. Rolex logo on clasp was worn, and has been nicely restored by our jeweler.
