Rolex Submariner ref 16800 transitional model serial# 7.9 million circa 1983 with matte black dial with richly patina’d luminous indexes, hands, and pearl.
This is the popular transitional model which marks the evolution from the 1680 plastic crystal non quick set model, to the more modern 16610 model with sapphire crystal, quick set date, and modern glossy black dial with white gold luminous surrounds. This transitional model offers the vintage aesthetic of the plastic crystal model, with the convenience and functionality of the sapphire crystal and quick set date, the first generation quickset calibre 3035 movement instead of the non quick set 1570 movement, and unidirectional instead of bidirectional elapsed time bezel, and with the early vintage style matte black dial with luminous applied directly to the dial and with the deep depth rating of 1000 ft.
The current example is an exceptionally nice example with beefy lugs, a great looking matte black dial with rich tan luminous indexes, matching original luminous hands, and with the “pearl” of the bezel insert, also a rich patina’d color. With a very tight, excellent condition Rolex heavy Oyster bracelet with flip lock clasp. Overall, an extremely nice and very desirable example of this popular model.
