An especially pleasing example one owner, first generation matte dial ref 16800 Rolex Submariner circa 1982. This is an extremely desirable example with the rich ivory patina’d tritium lume plots that we all love. With original unretouched matching tritium lume hands, and with a super pleasing aged original elapsed time bezel insert with blue toning. Completed with original Rolex stainless steel 93150 bracelet with flip lock clasp with diver’s extension, 593 end pieces, and corresponding letter M6 date code.
This is the popular transitional model, an early sapphire crystal ref 16800, which follows the plastic crystal model 1680, and precedes the 16610 with newer steel and movement. This model features a sapphire crystal, and a quick set date ref 3035 movement. This first generation sapphire crystal model offers the convenience and security of a more water resistant design, while retaining the popular vintage character of the earlier matte dial models. The 16800 models feature the elapsed time unidrectional bezel with click spring.
Provenance? The 3rd question were are frequently asked, following, “is it all original?” and “has the case ever been polished…” is “Do we know any history or provenance?” Well in this case we do know the history, but only in a general way. The watch was purchased from the original owner, a prominent individual who shall remain nameless, who was gifted the watch from his Dad on his 18th, or perhaps 21st birthday. He wore the watch for 20 years, and then put it away as he then favored more contemporary pieces that suited his station in life. Unfortunately, he did not retain the box or papers, but happily for us, he did retain the watch!
The dial is properly marked 1000 foot depth rating and is without oil spots, flaking, drag marks or degradation of the lumes. We presume that case has been previously polished but the watch retains its beefy lugs. The bracelet shows moderate stretch consistent with its age and use. The pearl was missing when we acquired the watch and it has been replaced and color matched to the dial and hands.
The watch has not been previously offered for sale, and we are happy to be able to offer such a great looking example of this popular transitional model. The owner of WBAW? has been wearing this watch for the last several weeks, and as you might imagine, is ambivalent about letting such a beauty go!
