An extremely early and rare Rolex Explorer ref 6610 with “Exclamation Point Dial”. Almost unbelievably this already incredible Explorer still includes its original warranty paper and purchase receipt. Originally sold on April 16th, 1958 in Singapore, this time capsule has a serial number of 114,xxx, and a caseback code of 1957. With a stunning, aged black gilt dial, with rare exclamation point at 6 o’clock, a sign of its lesser radiation count. As far as gilt dials go this one is particularly beautiful, with an incredibly bright tonality and flashing brass coloring. The gilt hands have aged beautifully and match the outer gilt track perfectly.
Featuring a 36mm diameter case with smooth bezel, acrylic crystal, and screw down crown and caseback. The watch is worn on a rare later Rolex C&I rivet bracelet. Powered by Rolex calibre 1030 self winding chronometer rated movement. Recently fully serviced and offered with our 1 year warranty of accurate time keeping and operation. Purchase includes our fine leather watch pouch, popular for travel and storage, and a $55 value.
An interesting historical note, we bought our first gilt dial 6610 Explorer some 20+ years back for a mere $2300 at a watch show in Dearborn, Michigan. All the dealers passed on the watch because as a 6610, and not a 1016, it was not recognized as a “real” Explorer 1. The same watch today would easily fetch $25,000.00. And rather than considered an “also ran,” it would be a prized piece perhaps even more desirable than the 1016 version. How times have changed!!!
