A transitional first generation model Rolex Explorer II ref 16550 serial # 8.8 million circa 1986. This is the first sapphire crystal Explorer II, which was produced with an option of 2 dials, one white which tended to turn a cream color, and glossy black dial like the current example with richly colored luminous indexes and matching hands. This example features the correct and scarce first generation “square font” 16550 bezel. An attractive example model previously polished, but with beefy lugs, and with clean original gloss black dial. Note the lume plots and hands are tritium, but they have been colored to produce the rich warm hue you see in the photos. A desirable early Explorer II with a lot of eye appeal!
With original heavy Oyster 78360 bracelet with 501B end pieces and deployment clasp, and powered by caliber 3085 movement with independently set hour hand. Recently serviced and left unpolished as acquired. Guaranteed genuine and offered with our 1 year warranty of accurate time keeping and operation.
Your purchase includes our popular fine Italian leather watch pouch, ideal for travel or storage, a $65.00 value.
Note: The 16550 is the first generation sapphire crystal Explorer II, replacing the unpopular (at the time) 1655 so called orange hand Explorer II AKA Steve Mcqueen. The 16550 is distinguished from the next generation 16570 by the distinctive squared font of the 16550 bezel. Also analogous to the first generation ref 16760 “Fat Lady” GMT II, the 16550 used the slightly thicker 3085 movement, while the 16750 like the 16710, used the updated 3185 movement.
