Scarce transitional Oyster Quartz cased Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust ref# 1630 circa 1978. This is a one year only production model which utilizes the Oyster quartz case and integral bracelet, but is powered by a self winding movement. The more common quartz version of this model is the ref# 17013, while this model is the ref# 1630.
Featuring a 36mm diameter case with gold fluted bezel, sapphire crystal, and screw down case back. With original champagne dial with applied indexes and baton hands, and with sloped inner minutes track bezel, not found on the Oyster Quartz model. Powered by self winding chronometer rated caliber 1570 movement with sweep seconds. With Rolex stainless and 18K yellow gold integral flat link Jubilee style bracelet r3ef 96673 with deployment clasp.
The case is in very sharp condition while the bracelet shows wear and a bit of looseness associated with use. The bracelet is good length and will comfortably fit a 7 1/2″ wrist. The dial is in beautiful condition with evenly patina’d tritium lume indexes and matching hands.
It is likely that this model was the prototype for the Oyster Quartz model, evidence the short production run preceding the introduction of the quartz model, the recessed dial, and the sloped inner minutes bezel which occupies the space needed for the thicker quartz movement. With its larger and more geometric case design, and self winding movement, the 1630 is a very popular though little known variation.
