A vintage Rolex stainless steel Datejust ref 1601 circa 1972 with a gently aged original blue dial. As is common on blue Rolex dials of this era, this dial shows fading and erosion of the blue paint in select areas of the dial, most noticably at the “crease” of the pie pan, as well as a ‘fringe” around the outer perimeter of the dial. While we most often do not offer dials with unattractive paint loss, in our opinion this example has an appealing vintage character and has considerable merit in spite of, or because of the gentle aging.
This is the 36mm full size man’s model of the era with 14K WG fluted bezel, acrylic crystal, original blue pie pan dial with original tritium lume and some loss of lume to the hour and minute hand. Powered by self winding caliber 1570 movement with non quick set date and sweep seconds.
Fitted with a complementary fine leather strap for a casual and sporty vintage look. The case shows its age with scratches and wear, and we have left the watch in this unpolished condition and not tried to make it look “new.” Recently fully serviced and offered with our 1 year warranty of accurate time keeping and operation.
Postscript: This dial may not be tropical enough for Alton Brown, and those who aspire to heavily distressed dials, but leave it out in the rain, cold, and weather for 20 years, and it may reach that level!
Your purchase includes one of our fine Italian leather watch travel pouches, ideal for travel and storage, a $65 value!
