Rolex Cellini 18K YG King Midas ref# 4126 circa 1970s. An unusual and dramatic 28mm Gerald Genta designed asymmetrical case with the winding crown positioned on left side of the case.
There are a number of varations of the King Midas model. The earliest versions were produced with integral bracelets and were marketed as the heaviest gold watches ever produced at that time. The early versions also include the MIDAS name on the dial, in stylized Greek letters. The later production bracelet and strap models did not bear the MIDAS name on the dial and KING MIDAS engraved on the edge of the case. While the later models lack the MIDAS name, they continue to be referred to as the King Midas model.
A note on design, when turned on its side, the watch case resembles the geometric shape of the ancient Greek Parthenon Temple with its peaked roof line. This in fact was the design inspiration for this model!
The current example features a pronounced hobnail pattern throughout the wide surface of the bezel. As we have mentioned elsewhere, textured gold cases, bezels, and bracelets are seeing increased interest from a design perspective. The case condition of this example is quite sharp, and we think this hobnail bezel pattern is quite compelling.
This example features an especially clean and appealing original champagne dial with minimalist applied indexes and simple baton hands. The watch is powered by manual wind caliber 650 movement which has just been fully serviced by one of our veteran watchmakers. Fitted with a custom dark brown crocodile strap and 18K YG Rolex logo buckle.
A great condition vintage Rolex dress model with a striking and attention grabbing design.
