This watch comes from a bygone era when models with chronometer rated movements were rigorously tested over 15 days, at various temperatures, positions, and amount of winding, with these results then hand recorded on a large parchment style document specifying results on a daily basis of these test results. Only watches of the highest precision and reliability were issued such chronometer certificates. Today, such detailed and individualized chronometer certificates do not exist. Instead, examples of a chronometer rated movement are submitted for testing, and all examples of the same caliber are then collectively issued chronometer status. This oversized document is quite impressive to behold, and is in especially fine condition.
This watch actually comes with an unheard of 3 Rolex warranty certificates. The large chronometer certificate already mentioned dated June 15th, 1959, another small parchment style Rolex Warranty certificate which shows a date of sale of the watch on August 1, 1959, and which bears the hand written signature of Hans Wilsdorf, founder of Rolex. Hans Wilsdorf died in 1960, which renders this signed certificate among the last such certificates personally signed by him. The 3rd document is a small parchment style card confirming the chronometer designation of this specific watch.
Continuing on with the details, this watch comes with its original oversize clamshell box, both the cream color outer box and the inner green flocked clamshell box, each in remarkably well preserved condition.
This is a remarkable great looking and totally wearable 65 year old watch, with a great appearance, and with an astounding amount of historical documentation that the original owner and family kept in great shape for all these years.
As yet a further aside, when we note the chronometer certificate was signed on June 15, and the warranty certificate was dated a only a month and a ½ later, does this tell us that only 45 days passed between the watch being issued its chronometer certificate, and the watch reaching the retailer and being sold to the client! If so, this is quite a watch, and quite a story!
