A scarce and fine condition salesman sample Hamilton Railroad pocket watch grade 992B movement serial # 154,xxx circa 1901. Featuring 16 size 10K yellow gold filled open face case in fine condition. With very pleasing “double sunk” white enamel dial with bold block style arabic figures with oversize blued steel spade hands. With popular “bar over crown” design and original signed Hamilton crown. Powered by 21 jewel manual wind, lever set 992B grade movement with damascened plates and gold set jewels. Very nice condition piece. In excellent running condition and offered with our 1 year warranty of accurate time keeping and operation.
Salesman sample models came with clear case backs so the salesman could show the jeweler the movement without having to open the caseback. These are relatively scarce, and much sought after in good condition. This is guaranteed an original sales person model, and not a later case back modification.
We also offer turned wood pocket watch stands available separately so you can display and enjoy your antique pocket watch on a night stand or mantle. No more pocket watches relegated to the sock drawer!
Background: American made railroad grade pocket watches by such companies as Elgin, Waltham, Illinois, and Hamilton were the finest quality pocket watches of the era; of such high standards and quality, that some Swiss companies attempted to copy the work of the American firms by producing watches with American sounding names. We offer here a fine example of American watch making from the early part of the 20th century. Explanation of lever set: To qualify for use on America’s railroads, watches needed to meet a number of rigorous criteria of design and accuracy. One of the most important was the use of a lever to free up the time changing function of the movement. Lever set set refers to the safety mechanism of a small steel lever, exposed by unscrewing the bezel, which allows the movement to be set. Stem wound, as most watches, but lever set, prevents unintentional changing of the time, as could occur if the stem were to pull out, or loosen while being carried. This is a vital safety feature of all railroad grade watches when errors of time keeping could have disastrous effects on trains running on strict schedules over the same tracks.
