Operation of railroad grade pocketwatches: For those of you unfamiliar with Railroad grade pocket watches, “stem wind, lever set” refers to the safety mechanism to prevent accidental changing of the time. All railroad grade watches are designed with a small steel lever, exposed by unscrewing the bezel, which allows the movement to be set. After setting the time, the lever is slid back in place, and the bezel resecured. The lever set feature prevents unintentional changing of the time, as could occur if the stem were to pull out, or loosen while being carried. This is a safety feature of all railroad grade watches designed for reliable time keeping and safety of operation on American railroads in the first half of the 20th century.
