Vermeil refers to a sterling silver case coated with 20 microns of 18K gold. We often see vermeil cases misrepresented as 18K gold. This example is not solid gold, but has an 18K gold plating over sterling silver. Solid 18K gold case models sell for considerably more.

In the 1970’s Cartier offered the Tank Louis with a variety of dials including the blue “faux” lapis, burgundy, Chinese Red, cream, and black. The lacquer paint on these dials was prone to “shrink” over time, causing “spidering” of the dial, which is present on the current example. All the paint is intact, leaving a shallow spider web pattern across the dial surface. The dial is entirely original and unrestored.
