A magnificent condition example matte dial ref 16800 complete with original Rolex warranty papers, case back sticker, and box serial # 8.2 million circa 1984. A truly great early example transitional 16800 Submariner with first generation matte dial. Featuring an apparently little used, well cared for, and entirely unpolished very beefy lug case with sapphire crystal, quickset date caliber 3035 chronometer movement.

The original matte black dial is flawless, with light ivory patina’d tritium lume plots, matching original tritium lume hands, and unidirectional elapsed time bezel with aged pearl. With original 93150 heavy Oyster bracelet with 593 end pieces and flip lock clasp with H date code (1983). The bracelet is extremely tight, again showing that this watch received relatively little use and was well cared for. Fine light scratches from use, but like the watch, appears unpolished. With all 12 links to comfortably fit a 7.5+ inch wrist.

The papers as shown in the photos likewise are in mint and pristine condition almost defying the age of the watch they look so fresh, unwrinkled, dog eared, or moldy! The original 16800 sticker was applied to the papers and like the papers is fully intact and mint. The dealer stamp on the papers show that the watch was originally purchased in Tarragona, Spain a port city in the Catalonia region not far from Barcelona. The original box likewise is in mint condition, though the inside “easel” is absent.

The watch includes a service booklet and an undated service card. The watch is in excellent operating condition and is being offered with our 1 year warranty of accurate time keeping and operation. It appears that no visible components were changed during the service. Dial, hands, bezel, pearl, and crystal all appear to be original. There are a few tiny fleabites along the edge of the crystal, barely noticeable which we will not replace.

In our opinion, the matte dial 16800 is the best combination of a vintage and modern submariner. The matte black 16800 dial is the same as found in the vintage plastic crystal 1680 models. However the 16800 matte dial is marked for 1000 foot depth rating made possible by the use of the sapphire crystal, versus the 660 foot depth rating of the 1680. Like the 1680 dial, the matte 16800 dial lacks the white gold luminous index surrounds of the next generation dial.
