Rolex Submariner ref 16800, with beautiful chocolate dial. This particular watch is extremely late in the production of the reference. While it is true that the 16800 was discontinued in 1988, the number of 16800’s that appear from that year is minuscule. The latest 16800’s that we usually see are late 9 million serial numbers, or maybe ever R serial numbers. To find an L serial example, before even touching on how beautiful it has aged, is incredibly exciting. In 1988 the watch began with a glossy black dial with white tritium indexes, hands, and pearl, as well as a black aluminum bezel insert. In 30 years all of that has changed. The bezel has taken on a deep blue hue, while the pearl on it has aged to a wonderful cream. The tritium markers and hands have gone from white to nearly that same color cream, matching nearly flawlessly. At first glance though the real standout of this piece is the dial, having gone from its original gloss black, to an even and stunning chocolate brown. The texture and color of that brown even ebbs and flows as it makes its way across the dial. Truly one of the more beautiful 16800’s that we have had the pleasure to offer.
