Rolex “Red” Submariner ref 1680 serial # 3.7 million circa 1973 complete with nearly everything from time of purchase with the exception of the Rolex warranty papers. See Photos. Featuring a 40mm diameter case with bi-directional bezel and acrylic crystal, beautiful condition original matte black dial with attractive ivory colored luminous indexes, namesake red printed SUBMARINER and color matched luminous hands. The dial is free of any defects, oil spots, abrasions, discoloration, or any small nicks or paint loss close to the dial edge, all common defects on these dials.

Featuring a good condition beefy lug case appropriate to the age and use of the watch, but with any significant dings, nicks, excessive polishing, corrosion of case back or between the lugs. Bezel insert appears to be a later replacement, and is in good condition without chips or detracting scratches. With period folded link 9315 bracelet with flip lock clasp and 380 end pieces also showing some looseness and appears original to the watch.

This watch is a treasure in that it comes with nearly every bit of documentation when the watch was sold new with the exception of the Rolex warranty papers. Included is the purchaser’s receipt showing he paid $392 plus $15.68 excise tax and was given a 20% discount off the listed $490 price in 1973. Also included is the original anchor, serial #’d hand tag, 1680 sticker from the outside of the box with retail price, Rolex Submariner booklet with date code for 1973, 200 meters/660 feet anchor, chronometer hang tag, trip lock crown plastic plaque, and additional small booklets from the time of purchase. While unfortunately lacking the original Rolex warranty, no question these materials add considerable interest and value to this piece.

Xmas 1973! On the more sentimental side, there is a personal note inside the Rolex booklet, with the brochure photo of the red submariner outlined within a heart shape, with the tender message, “Merry Christmas, Love.” Clearly the watch was a Xmas gift from the wife to her husband in 1973!!! The note is further embellished with decorative holly drawn by the wife.

The calibre 1570 chronometer rated self winding movement with sweep seconds and date is just back from service from one of our veteran watchmakers, has been pressure tested for water resistance (though no longer covered for submersion), and is offered with our 1 year warranty of accurate time keeping and operation.
