Rolex Oyster Perpetual ref 1018 Black Gilt Dial circa 1967

Scarce black gilt dial Rolex Oyster Perpetual ref 1018 36mm diameter model serial # 1.7 million circa 1967. This is a relatively rare reference #, with a 36mm diameter case, it is larger than the 34mm Oyster Perpetual ref 1002, and is the same size and similar configuration as the popular ref 1016 Explorer 1.  In fact, 1018 models are sometimes misrepresented as Explorer 1 1016’s, when fitted with an Explorer dial and hands.

The current example features a smooth bezel and acrylic crystal and very pleasing original gloss black gilt T SWISS T signed dial with gilt printing dial and with applied silver indexes and tapered silver hands. With very glossy original lacquer surface which has not dried up or crazed. (Note one small spot of lacquer lifting at 5:28 on the dial.) Note, the very distinctive and characteristic dial of all 1018 models, with the double index 3, 6, 9 markers. This dial characteristic is part of the 1018’s DNA and helps to identify a 1018 among a sea of Oyster Perpetuals when the larger size is may be less obvious.  The watch is powered by chronometer rated calibre 1560 self winding movement with sweep seconds and case back date code of 1/67. Fully serviced and and offered with our 1 year warrantee of accurate time keeping and operation. Offered on a distressed leather strap for a great vintage look.
