Rolex Explorer 1 ref 14270 Scarce “Frozen” Tritium Dial circa 1995

Rolex stainless steel Explorer 1 ref 14270 serial# W8 circa 1995 with distinctive and unusual for this model “frozen” tritium lume dial. Featuring a 36mm full size man’s model with smooth bezel and sapphire crystal and glossy black original tritium 3/6/9 Explorer dial and hands. Powered by calibre 3130 self winding movement with sweep seconds and date. With Rolex stainless steel heavy Oyster 78790 bracelet with 558B end pieces and short flip lock clasp with AB1 date code.

Watch has been left unpolished as acquired, but can be professionally polished on request. Case and bracelet show scratches commensurate with use probably as a daily wearer by the original owner. No box or papers.

This is the first we have encountered of a so called “frozen” dial 14270. We have seen this crystalized surface on Subs and GMTs of the era, but previously not on an Explorer. The frozen dial surface owes to a defect in the paint which over time created a fine crystalized surface. For a model that is pretty uniform in its appearance, and in spite of the use of tritium rarely develops much if any patina, this example represents an interesting and somewhat unique variation.

In excellent preowned condition. Guaranteed genuine, pressure tested for water resistance and offered with our 1 year warrantee of accurate time keeping and operation. A now classic recently discontinued collector’s model with first generation tritium luminous dial and hands, for a man or oversized for a woman.
