Rolex Daytona ref 16520 Luminova Zenith circa 1999

It’s no secret that over the past two decades, one watch has dominated both the hearts of thousands of collectors, and the watch market as a whole. The Daytona began production in 1963 and has been worn by childhood heroes the world over ever since. Though even within what is such a beloved model as a whole, some specific references begin to rocket ahead of the rest. And over the past 5 years we have seen the absolutely meteoric rise of one such reference, the 16520.

The ref. 16520, or the “Zenith” Daytona, so named for its use of the famous Zenith El Primero caliber, was introduced in 1988. While being a slightly larger diameter than its forefathers, it also was the first time a Daytona was ever powered by an automatic movement. A massive leap in the evolution of one of the most iconic watches ever created. Featuring an updated 39mm case, for the first time with crown guards, and also with screw down pushers. This model also used a sapphire crystal for the very first time on a Daytona.

The current example is an A7 serial number, produced in 1999 with white “SWISS MADE” signature dial designating Luminova as the luminous material of the dial and hands. Of course being a 16520 it is powered by the modified Zenith caliber movement produced specifically for this model Rolex. The bracelet is also the correct and original 78390 with 503B end pieces. The bezel of the 16520 is a stainless steel tachymeter. The case is in excellent, previously worn condition. The bezel retains it’s original bright factory finish and shows light scratches and abrasions associated with use, but not abuse.

While we have no box or papers for this model, we do have provenance of this watch having been purchased at auction preowned at Butterfield Bonhams in 2014. Of course the watch is guaranteed genuine and will be offered with our 1 year warrantee of accurate time keeping and operation.

Vintage Rolex & Pre-Owned Rolex Watches

There is no watch brand more associated with quality, prestige, luxury, success, and social status than Rolex. Founded in the UK in 1908 and soon relocated to Switzerland, Rolex is credited with countless technical advances in time keeping accuracy, the introduction in 1928 of the water and dust resistant “Oyster” case, and in 1933, the perfection of the self winding “Perpetual” movement. With sponsorship of sporting events as wide reaching as the America’s cup, to the Daytona 500, golf and tennis tournaments, and expeditions to the far reaches of the world, Rolex has always promoted it’s brand as an icon of success, achievement, and conquest. With popular “tool” watches such as the diver’s Submariner or Seadweller, the Aviator’s dual time zone GMT, the spelunker’s 24 hour Explorer, or the auto racer’s Daytona, Rolex has created loyal followings for the sports minded man. And the dressy Datejust and Presidential models, once the CEO’s trademark timepiece, are now much sought after by both men and woman as a luxury fashion statement. Whether vintage Rolex or more contemporary, your choice of a Rolex will always be a good choice.

All of our pre-owned Vintage Rolex watches are fully restored and guaranteed genuine to give you excellent service and piece of mind.
