NOTE: Bubblebacks were so named for the rounded case back designed to accommodate the rotating weight sitting atop the movement that moves on a center pivot to power the mainspring of the self winding movement. Rolex is credited with introducing, more accurately perfecting the self winding movement and introduced this feature in 1932 in the bubbleback model. Bubblebacks were produced in a vast array of metals, and carats of gold and with many dial variations until the 1950’s. The self winding system of course has been revised and perfected, and case backs no longer need to be so deep, but this same system continues today as the basis of all self winding watches, and it started with the bubblebacks!
