Patek Philippe Nautilus ref. 3800 18K YG circa 1980’s

SOLD

The Patek Philippe Nautilus is currently one of the most sought after watches in the world. Whether we are discussing the original ref. 3700, it’s modern twin in the ref. 5711, or the host of other complicated references like the 5980 chronograph or the 5740 perpetual calendar. All of them have a rabid fan base and command massive premiums over their retail prices. One reference has been able to more or less slip under the radar though and isn’t hovering around the high five or low six figures. What we have here is the rare, and smaller cousin to the original Nautilus 3700, the first update to the Nautilus line beginning in 1981. The ref. 3800. This one in the even more rarely seen yellow gold.

The 3700 and the 5711 both measure in at a “Jumbo” 42mm. while the 3800 was made for those wanting something slightly more refined, at 37mm. The combination of the dark blue signature Nautilus dial with the bright yellow gold case, provides for endless wrist glances throughout the day. The 3800 was further special as a reference in that it introduced a running seconds hand for the first time in the line, as well as being powered by a brand new in-house caliber, the 335 SC. The watch is worn on its usual, and incredibly comfortable Nautilus bracelet, with H links and subtly rounded center links.

All around the 3800 was a massive step forward for the Nautilus family, all tied up in a slightly smaller bow. As the years have gone on the 3800 has always trailed behind the full size versions, but honestly with hardly any reason. This watch is stunning both in photos and in person on the wrist, and it is a fantastic example from an era where Patek was attempting to forge ahead into uncharted waters.

Guaranteed genuine, recently fully serviced and offered with a 1 year warranty of accurate timekeeping and operation.
